Betty was born in Marion on December 31, 1930 to the late Irvin E. and Elma A. (Burchard) Smith. She passed away on December 13, 2018 in her daughter’s Alexandria home.
Betty graduated from Marion High School and attended Ball State University. She worked for Indiana Michigan Power and the Social Security office before becoming a full time homemaker. Betty married George R. “Bob” Spencer on October 21, 1956. Mr. Spencer preceded her in death on July 3, 1999.
Betty was an avid reader and enjoyed all genres of literature. She also enjoyed flower gardening and traveling to visit her children. Later in life she began a swimming regimen at the YMCA to help with her arthritic pain and during her many hours swimming she cultivated many friendships.
She is survived by her children, Pamela S. Smith, Littleton, New Hampshire; Lisa A. (Mark) Ramirez, Alexandria; Michael R. Spencer, Ft. Worth, Texas; 2 grandchildren, Timothy (Mary) Ramirez, Alexandria; Andrew Ramirez, Marion; 5 great-grandchildren, Natalie, Piersen, Brynlee, Jackson and Noah.
She is also preceded in death by her sisters, Evelyn L. Flynn and Joyce Joan Seymour.
The funeral service will be held at 1pm on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 in Owen-Weilert-Duncan Funeral Home, Marion Chapel, 2722 South Washington Street, Marion, with Rev. Steve Freeman officiating. The family will receive visitors from 11am until the service begins at 1pm. Burial will immediately follow in Grant Memorial Park Cemetery, Marion, Indiana.
