Indiana Stay-at-Home Update, Clarifications

TIME: The order will go into effect at 11:59 PM on Tuesday, March 24th – so essentially at Midnight on Wednesday, March 25th. The order will remain in effect until April 7th.

WHEN YOU CAN LEAVE YOUR HOME: The order is not a complete lockdown and still allows residents to leave their homes for work, medical care, buying groceries and other activities essential to the health and safety of people and pets. The actual order DOES limit travel to essential travel.

WORK: Businesses that aren’t considered essential should close: “hair salons, spas, nail salons, tattoo parlors [and] barber shops”. The order states that essential businesses will remain open and are defined by the state as businesses that “include but are not limited to grocery stores, pharmacies, gas stations, police stations, fire stations, hospitals, doctor’s offices, health care facilities, garbage pickup, public transit and public service hotlines such as SNAP and HIP 2.0.” The governor also says “Laundromats, dry cleaners and laundry service providers are considered essential businesses. So, too, are daycares.”

RESTAURANTS: Restaurants and bars can still do takeout and delivery under the stay-at-home order. Governor Holcomb also signed an executive order to suspend food and beverage licenses of any business NOT following the take-out only rules.

ROADS: Roads will remain open during the stay-at-home period. But the Governor says visiting family members should be limited to those “who need medical or other essential assistance, such as ensuring an adequate food supply.” Under the stay-at-home order, law enforcement will not be stopping drivers on their way to and from work, traveling for an essential activity such as going to the grocery store, or just taking a walk.

YOU CAN GO OUTSIDE: Families will be able to go outside and take a walk, run or bike ride, but they should continue to practice social distancing by remaining 6 feet away from other people. Playgrounds are closed because they pose a high risk of increasing spreading the virus.
