Marion Man Arrested after bringing Contraband into Grant County Jail

GRANT COUNTY, Ind. – On 3-8-2018 Civilian Jail Officer, Christopher John Michael Black, age 26, Marion, Indiana was arrested by the Grant County Sheriff’s Department after he was found to be bringing contraband into the Grant County Jail. In late February the Sheriff’s Department received credible information that Christopher Black was bringing contraband into the jail in exchange for money. The Sheriff’s Department started an investigation into the allegations and placed Mr. Black under surveillance. In the early morning of 3-8-2018 Mr. Black was observed retrieving a package containing a baggie of substance similar to a controlled substance. The baggie was then delivered to an inmate inside the jail. At no point did a controlled substance or dangerous substance enter the jail.

Law enforcement is continuing to investigate to determine if there are more people involved in bringing contraband into the jail or if Mr. Black was working alone. Due to the nature of the crime it was decided early into the investigation that Mr. Black would be immediately arrested should the allegations be true instead of waiting to identify additional suspects.

Mr. Black has been employed as a civilian jail officer at the Grant County Sheriff’s Department since 8-4-2017. Mr. Black was charged with:

Ct. 1 Conspiracy Traffic with an Inmate I.C 35-44.1-3-5(b) Level 5 Felony
