A service celebrating the life of William S. Merkert will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, January 28, 2017 at the Laird-Eddy Funeral Home, 201 N. Main Street, Amboy, IN with Pastor Dwight Elliott officiating. Burial will be at the Park Lawn Cemetery with Graveside Military Rites provided by the Miami County Military Rites Unit. Family and friends will gather from 11:00-1:00 PM at the Laird-Eddy Funeral Home.

William S. Merkert, 96 of Amboy passed away at 6:20 A.M., Friday, January 20, 2017 at St. Vincent’s, Kokomo, IN. William was born in Marion, IN on May 8, 1920 the son of Charles W. and Lalie Trowbridge Merkert. William was a 1938 graduate of Converse High School. William married Harriett J. Haines July 29, 1942 in Peru, IN. As part of America’s greatest generation he enlisted in the US Army during WWII on January 12, 1942 and served until September 21, 1945. During his time in the Army his battles and campaigns took him to Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes. William received several Decorations and Citations to include the Fame Theater Ribbon with 5 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, and a Bronze Star Medal. He retired from Delco Electronics after 18 years. William was a member of the V.F.W. and the Amboy American Legion. He enjoyed golfing and Skeet shooting. William is survived by his wife Harriett, granddaughters Susan Merkert-Campos and her husband Edward, of Austin, TX, Anne Marie Braddock and her husband Matthew, of Martin, TN, a grandson Eric Steinmetz, of Manchester, MO, great-grandchildren William, Christian, Emma, Anna, Benjamin, Alistair, Calvin and Daniel, a sister-in-law Gracanna Hamilton, Kokomo, IN and a daughter-in-law Rebecca Steinmetz. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Rex William Merkert, 2 brothers Robert Merkert and Carrol Murphy. A service celebrating the life of William S. Family and friends will gather from 11:00-1:00 PM at the Laird-Eddy Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made through the Laird-Eddy Funeral Home to an Organization of your choice.
