WABASH, IN- This year’s “The Rock” scholarship was awarded to Shannon King, an 8th grade student at Wabash Middle School. “The Rock,” short for the Wabash High School Class of 1972 “The Rock” Scholarship, was recently established by the WHS Class of ’72. The Class created the scholarship in celebration of their 50th graduation anniversary.
Unlike traditional scholarships awarded to high school seniors, “The Rock,” is awarded early, to an 8th grade student each year at Wabash Middle School (WMS) who shows attributes of self-reliance in the face of life’s challenges. The student must be participating in the Community Foundation’s Imagine Early (Early Award Scholarship) Program and is selected by school guidance counselors and teachers for traits of leadership, compassion, kindness, work ethic, and loyalty to Wabash City Schools. The $1,000 scholarship award is deposited into the student’s Imagine Early Fund administered by the Community Foundation and will be available to the student for post-secondary education upon graduation from Wabash High School.
Mike Beauchamp and Theone Dickos, members of the WHS Class of 1972, were pleased to announce the award at the WMS academic achievement ceremony. Following the ceremony, Shannon’s family joined her for a photograph beside “The Rock” itself - the twenty-ton boulder gifted by the class of 1972.
