Carolyn Marie Barnes, 89, of Wabash, Indiana, died at 10:04 pm, Friday, November 15, 2024, at The Waters of Wabash East. She was born on December 15, 1934, in Logansport, Indiana, to Henry C. and Edna A. (Smith) Henning.
Carolyn's family moved to Marion, Indiana in 1937, where her father was transferred to a track foreman for the Pennsylvania Railroad. She was a 1953 graduate of Marion High School. Carolyn lived in Marion, until she married James "Jim" Barnes on June 12, 1953; he died February 26, 2018. They moved to Huntington County, where she became a farmer's wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Carolyn helped Jim with farm work besides being a homemaker. She became a member of the Banquo Christian Church and the Christian Women's Fellowship both Evening and Day Circles, where she served at different times as Treasurer for both. She was a Sunday School teacher for young children, Deaconess, and served on several committees. Carolyn was an avid sports fan, enjoyed watching Big 10 basketball, and followed the Indiana Hoosiers. She enjoyed attending her children's and grandchildren's activities. She also enjoyed gardening, flowers, reading, listening to music, taking walks with her husband, and spending time with family. Carolyn and Jim took many family vacations to the Eastern and Southern states, and more trips to the state of Michigan. In 2013, they sold the family farm and moved to Wabash.
She is survived by two children, Donald (Olinda) Barnes of Decatur, Indiana, and Sharon (Bill) Middleton of Wabash; four grandchildren, April Rentschler of Boynton Beach, Florida, Adam (Teara) Middleton of Wabash, Jacob (Maryann Erickson and her son, Drew) Barnes of Alpena, Michigan, and Donis (Wesley Kretzschmar) Barnes of Seattle, Washington; great grandson, James Middleton and his mother, Kristina, both of Andrews, and sister-in-law, Rosemary Barnes of Huntington. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and great grandson, Brandon Middleton.
Funeral services will be 10:00 am, Friday, November 22, 2024, at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Avenue, Wabash, with Pastor Harold Smith officiating. Burial will be in LaFontaine I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Friends may call 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home.
Preferred memorial is Banquo Christian Church.
