Community Foundation supports Miami County Buddy Bags

MIAMI COUNTY, IN-The Miami County Community Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to McGrawsville Church to support their impactful Buddy Bags Program that provides essentials weekend meals for students in the Maconaquah School System. This grant will help ensure that the 200+ students in elementary school receive meals to take home each weekend.   Launched in 2017 by a group of local mothers, the Buddy Bags Program was developed out of a heartfelt desire to address food insecurity among community children. Since its inception, the program has been wholly funded and operated by the community.   “Food Security in [Miami County] is at 13.9-percent right now, that is 5,000 people who don’t always know where their next meal is coming from,” said Buddy Bags representative Louisa Haigh. “Feeding our children is critical in helping them succeed in academics, positive relationships, and play!”   Grants like this one are made possible through Miami County Community Funds, which currently have a $2-to-$1 donation matching initiative. Community Funds create a pool of flexible grant dollars available to charitable organizations that work to make our communities a better place for everyone.
