Construction of railroad overpass project to begin in Wabash

WABASH, IN- The much-anticipated Railroad Overpass Project is scheduled to begin in mid-February 2025 and continue through the end of the year. The Railroad Overpass project has an estimated completion timeframe for late January 2026.

The purpose of the project is to improve safety and mobility by addressing the adverse
effects of the current at-grade crossings. By constructing a bridge to carry motorists and
pedestrians over the railroad, safety is improved by reducing the potential for train, vehicle, and
pedestrian collisions while simultaneously providing unobstructed north-south access, reducing
delays in emergency response time.

The need for the project stems from delays caused by 17 daily train crossings, including both
day and night, which block traffic at 14 at-grade street crossings across the city. With the growing
length of trains, traffic can be blocked for up to one- and one-half hours each day. The new
bridge will alleviate these disruptions and provide a safer, more efficient route for the
community.

Mayor Scott Long expressed the importance of the project, stating, “This new bridge will not only
improve the flow of traffic but also enhance the safety and quality of life for everyone in
Wabash. We understand the challenges this construction may bring, but we’re committed to
working with our community to make this a successful and beneficial project for all.”

The project spans N. East St, beginning at Hill St, and extending to approximately 75 feet north
of Maple St. Demolition of houses along the construction path will begin in mid-February, with
the overpass construction slated to start on March 3, 2025.

Residents and commuters in the areas of Elm, Hill, and Maple Streets are advised to plan for
detours and find alternative routes during the construction period. Additional project
