Doris Jean Schnar

Doris Jean Schnar passed away peacefully in her sleep Wednesday morning at Aperion Care, Marion. Doris lived a full life for 98 years. She was born to Gladys and Hugh Shillinger on November 26, 1925, in Wabash County and graduated from Linlawn High School.  She was a devoted wife for 73 years to Robert Earl Schnar until he passed in 2015.  They met in 1943 while making bombs for World War II in a tire factory in Wabash that had been converted for the war effort.  Mom was transferred to the office when they found out that she was only 17!  She didn’t like that, but she continued to see Robert; and they married in November.  In 1945, their first child Jane was born, followed by Dick, Betty, and Gene.  Her family was her utmost priority as a stay-at-home mom for many years.  When Gene started school, she began working as a school secretary at Clayton-Brownlee.  She was known as “Super Secretary” as she continued to work at different Marion Schools into her 80s!

In addition, she served as local and national president of Delta Theta Tau Sorority.  She volunteered many hours for charity, including hospital and Christmas wrapping at the mall. In retirement Robert played in the Mississinewa Valley Community Band, and Doris baked cookies to serve as refreshments at concerts.  In 2012 they moved to Aperion Assisted Living, where Mom lived until last year when she moved to skilled nursing care there.  She was active in activities, including bingo, crafts, and social events.  Throughout the years, she enjoyed picnicking and traveling around the country with her family.

Surviving children include Jane Ann Long, Richardson, Texas; Richard Thomas Schnar (Judy), Canton, Georgia; and Robert Eugene Schnar, Anaheim, California.  Loving grandchildren including Michelle Ann Shollack (Tom), Murphy, Texas; Michael Joseph Long (Esther), Canyon Lake, Texas, Amanda Paniagua (Melvin), Orlando, Florida; Jacob Schnar, Chicago; Daniel Schnar, Chicago; and Dakota Schnar, Anaheim, California. Adored great-grandchildren are Bradley, Emily, Nicholas, Isabelle, and Gavin.  Doris was a beloved sister to Julia Ann Jacoby, Wabash, Indiana.  Her niece, Brenda Jacoby, was very helpful in bringing the sisters together for enjoyable visits.

Doris and Robert were members of First United Methodist Church in Marion.  Now they are reunited in eternity.

The family would like to thank the countless nurses and caregivers at Aperion Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing for their care.
