Doris K. Smith

Doris K. Smith, 91, of Macy passed away on March 1, 2024 at her shared home with her daughter Becky, in Mexico, with family at her side. She had lived there the past 2 years, as she fought Alzheimer’s disease.

She was born at home in Howard County on February 25, 1933 to Sherman and Carrie (Snyder) Hunt. She had 5 brothers, Paul, Dale, Doyal, Eugene, and Charles. She also had 5 sisters, Mabel O’Donell, Mary Fred, Frances Creason, Joyce Smith, and her surviving sister Nancy Ridenour, of Wabash.

Doris graduated Scircleville High School in 1951. She then proudly served in the Women’s Army Corps during the Korean War. She was honorably discharged as a Corporal in 1954.

Doris graduated from Indiana University. She taught school for 25 years at North Miami Elementary.

On October 9, 1957 she married Earl Leo Smith at Center Chapel Church. They remained married for over 50 years, until he preceded her in death on February 27, 2008.

Together they raised 5 children, William, “Bill” (Lynette) Smith of Chili, Anne (Paul) Hart of Macy, Becky White of Mexico, and 2 sons Mark David and Robert Gene, who also preceded her in death.

A devout Christian and member of Center Chapel Church, Doris loved her 9 grandchildren; Alicia (Paul) Pe, Zach (Courtney) Hart, Samuel Hart, Thomas (Patricia) White, Rylie (Ben) White, Lee (Samantha) Hall, Mary (Adam) Werner, Don (Terra) Hall, Carrie Smith and 16 great grandchildren. Doris also loved gardening, reading, and animals. She also had a love of Ireland, and was able to travel there twice before Alzheimer’s made it too difficult.

A Military Service will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at 3:30pm at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, 105 West Third Street, Peru, Indiana. Visitation will follow from 4:00pm-8:00pm.  A private family graveside will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
