Dr. Charles R. Kershner

Dr. Charles R. Kershner, 87, of Marion, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 3, 2025. Born in Marion, Indiana, on October 3, 1937, to Siebert and Dorothy (Freeman) Kershner, Charley led a life marked by dedication, passion, and love.

Charley graduated from Jefferson Township and pursued higher education at Ball State University, eventually earning his Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University School of Medicine. He dedicated 52 years to his career as an orthopedic surgeon, retiring in 2019. Charley was a respected member of the Fellowship of Hand Surgery, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Mecca Club, and the Aero Club. He also served his country in the Indiana National Guard.

Charley had a love for travel, exploring 82 countries with a special affinity for France. He was passionate about sailing, snow skiing, and using heavy machinery. Charley was known for his unwavering commitment to his patients, never turning anyone away.

In his leisure time, Charley enjoyed swimming daily, listening to classic country music, and indulging in fine dining. In retirement, he rediscovered a talent for oil painting, creating numerous artworks.

Charley’s legacy is one of compassion, dedication, and a zest for life. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Survivors include his wife, Sue (Fite) Kershner of Marion; sister, Barbara (David) Hess of Warren; sons: Mark (Teresa) Kershner of Newnan, GA; Christopher (Jennifer) Kershner of Pensacola, FL; and Alexander “Kip” (Samantha) Kershner of Upland; daughters: Michelle (Sean) Fahey of Carmel and Jennifer (Joseph) Beck of Zionsville; grandchildren, Jonathan, Marque, Trey, Dylan, Kaycee, Kendall, Presley, Reagan, and Chase; and great-grandchildren, Miles and Adaline.

He was preceded in death by his father, Siebert Kershner, and his mother, Dorothy (Freeman) Kershner.

The family will receive visitors from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Friday, January 10, 2025, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.

On Saturday, January 11, 2025, the family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon with a funeral service to celebrate Charley’s life beginning at 12:00 noon. James McKown, family friend, will be officiating with burial following at Grant Memorial Park.
