Elizabeth Shirley McCollum, 88, Marion, passed away at 7:58 pm on Thursday, June 20, 2024. She came to the United States from St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada. She met and fell for a young United States Air Force soldier stationed on the island. They married June 24, 1954. With $100 in her pocket, and well wishes from her parents, they moved to Indiana, not knowing anyone.
Shirley was a life-long homemaker. She worked side by side with her husband on a thriving tax business, which kept them busy. She loved to play Bingo, and would go whenever she could. She loved to laugh.
Shirley leaves behind, her oldest son, Kenneth B. (Mary) McCollum; grandson, Kenneth B. (Erin) McCollum II; great-grandchildren, Ethan M. Downam, Jaxon McCollum, Carlee S. McCollum; sister, Pauline Thomas of St. Johns; and so many beloved family members in Canada, all of whom she loved deeply.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Mary Ellen (Murphy) McDonald; husband of 48 years, Delmer McCollum; son, Steven J. McCollum; grandson, Steven Joseph McCollum, II; and 11 siblings.
The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to 12:45 pm on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, North Chapel 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.
Following the time of visitation, a funeral mass to honor Shirley’s life will begin at 1:00 pm at St. Paul Catholic Church 1031 W. Kem Rd., Marion, IN with Father Hilary officiating. Burial will take place at Grant Memorial Park.
