Helen Ann Bechtol, 104, formerly of Wabash, Indiana, died at 6:20 am, Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at Rolling Meadows Healthcare Center in LaFontaine, Indiana. She was born on September 24, 1920, in Youngstown, Ohio, to John and Susanna (Tomko) Wassill.
Helen was a 1939 graduate of Otter Creek High School in Terre Haute, Indiana. She married Loyd Judson Bechtol on January 26, 1946 in Indianapolis, Indiana; he died November 17, 1987. Helen was a homemaker, worked as a cashier at Clarks Finer Foods in Wabash, and also delivered Meals on Wheels. She was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, a former member of the Rosary Sodality, and belonged to the Woman’s Clubhouse Association. Helen enjoyed cooking.
She is survived by two children, Michael Judson (Anne) Bechtol of Wabash and Debra (Steve) Summit of Carmel, Indiana; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and her brother, John Wassill of Terre Haute, Indiana. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Barbara VanRoe and Victoria Lynn Bechtol; and two sisters.
There will be a Rosary service at 9:30 am Thursday, April 10, 2025 with a Funeral Mass to follow at 10:00 am at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 188 W. Sinclair Street, Wabash with Father Jay Horning officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawns Cemetery, Wabash. Arrangements by Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, Wabash.
