Horace Billy “Bill” Lane, 95, of Marion, Indiana, died at 9:30 am, Saturday, January 4, 2025, at Marion General Hospital in Marion, Indiana. He was born on November 12, 1929, in Dungannon, Virginia, to Kelly Lane, Sr. and Sadie M. (Moore) Estep.
Bill was the Valedictorian of the 1948 class from Coeburn High School in Coeburn, Virginia and served in the US Air Force. He married Lillian Salyer on July 5, 1950 in Wise, Virginia; she passed away on August 15, 2000. Bill sold insurance in Virginia for many years, worked at Fisher Body in Marion, Indiana, was the owner/operator of Jack’s Tavern and Bill’s Wonder Bar both in Marion, was the President of the Marion Tavern Association, and also worked for Indiana Bell Telephone. He was a member of the Water Street Community Church in Jonesboro, Indiana where he served on their musical worship team. Bill was a charter member of the Coeburn American Legion Post 243, life member of the Amvets in Marion, and also belonged to the Wabash American Legion Post 15, and the Wabash Eagles Lodge. He was a member of the Jonesboro Masonic Lodge, was a Shriner many years, and was also in the Scottish Rite in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction more than 50 years. His first love was music, where he started and belonged to several bands through the years. He enjoyed gardening, playing music, and had a great sense of humor.
He is survived by two children; Ed (Diane) Lane, of Milmine, Illinois, Karen (Todd) Volk of North Manchester, Indiana, seven grandchildren; Scott Lane of Milmine, Casey (Nicole) Lane of North Manchester, Todd (Mandy) Dale of Butler, Indiana, Jason (Ashley) Dale of North Manchester, Brandon (Meghann) Volk of North Manchester, Elysia Volk of Warsaw, Indiana, and Amber (Al) Earl of Gladwin, Michigan, 15 great-grandchildren, brother, Dan (Judy) Lane of Wabash, and special companion, Janice McCool of Marion. He was also preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, Kristi Lane, great-granddaughter, Lily Lane, two brothers, Howard Lane and Buster Lane, and two sisters, Jean Lucas and Joan Hill,
Funeral services will be 11:00 am, Monday, January 13, 2025, at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Avenue, Wabash, with Pastor Wally Champion officiating. Burial will be in Mississinewa Memorial Cemetery, Somerset. Friends may call 9:00 am – 11:00 am Monday, at the funeral home.
Preferred memorial is Water Street Community Church.
