HUNTINGTON, IN– Holiday season can be a difficult time for people who are missing loved ones who have passed away. Remembering them in the company of others who have gone through similar loss can provide comfort and fellowship.
Parkview Huntington Hospital and the Parkview Huntington Foundation will host an event to offer that comfort on Sunday, Dec. 3, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. “Lights to Remember” will take place in the hospital’s main lobby at 2001 Stults Road in Huntington.
This is the second year for the event, which will include light snacks and refreshments, music, and words from Doug Selig, vice president, patient care services, Parkview Huntington Hospital and Parkview Wabash Hospital. At the beginning of the event, there will be a moment of silence with the lighting of candles to remember guests’ loved ones.
“The holiday season is a time for light-hearted gatherings with family and friends,” says Selig. “But it is also a time for reflection. We created this event to support those who are feeling the absence of lost loved ones and offer them a way to remember and honor those special people while experiencing the warmth of community. We hope many folks will join us, and if they attended last year, they are certainly welcome to participate again.”
In a special remembrance, Dr. J. David Carnes will be honored. Dr. Carnes passed away earlier this year after a life of service as dedicated primary care physician, community leader, friend, supporter and philanthropist.
In addition to offering solace and remembrance, the event will also raise funds to benefit the Huntington Outdoor Wellness Fund, which is administered by the Parkview Huntington Foundation. This new fund – created in memory of Dr. Carnes and his concern for the overall well-being of area residents – will support outdoor wellness initiatives benefitting Parkview Huntington Hospital co-workers and the broader Huntington community.
For $10, individuals can have their loved one’s name displayed during the event and receive a special keepsake: a memorial ornament in the shape of a star. The ceramic ornaments will be hand-crafted by hospital and foundation volunteers.
“Our plan is to create a different ornament each year so people who continue to find this event meaningful for them year after year may choose to create a keepsake collection for themselves,” said Sonya Foraker, finance manager, Parkview Huntington Hospital.
