Karen Ann Austin

Karen Ann Austin, 73, North Manchester, passed away on April 5, 2025, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. She was born on September 14, 1951, in Columbia City, the daughter of Walter and Wilma (Hamman) Keirn, Karen had a caring spirit and tireless dedication to those around her.

Karen’s educational journey began at South Whitley High School, from which she graduated in 1969. She further pursued her passion for learning at Huntington University, where she proudly earned an Organization Management degree in just fourteen months. Later in life, she achieved an Associate’s degree in accounting, showcasing her unwavering commitment to education and self-improvement.

Professionally, Karen had an accomplished career that spanned various roles and responsibilities. For many years, she worked at Singer Controls in North Manchester, where she left a notable impact. Her compassionate nature led her to become a caregiver for Cardinal Services in Warsaw, where she touched the lives of many with her kindness. Additionally, Karen applied her expertise during tax season at H&R Block in North Manchester, serving as a Tax Accountant.

Above all, Karen was a dedicated mother and grandmother. She shared two children with her former husband, Paul Steven Austin. Although their marriage did not last, the love for their family endured, and together they welcomed two beloved grandchildren into the world. At the age of sixty, Karen embraced motherhood again when she became the nurturing figure in her grandchildren’s lives, ensuring they thrived and never went without. She took great pride in her grandchildren, often expressing how proud she was of their accomplishments and experiences.

Karen’s spirit was characterized by determination, hard work, and caring generosity. Throughout the last three years of her life, she bravely battled leukemia. Even in the face of such a significant challenge, she demonstrated remarkable resilience, continuing to work, selflessly prioritizing others, and never allowing her circumstances to define her. She was a woman who rarely complained, fully embodying the virtue of perseverance.

Her faith played a significant role in her life as well. Karen was a member of the Congregation Christian Church, contributing as part of the Church Round Table.

The loving memory of Karen Ann Austin will be forever cherished by her grandchildren, Jackson Austin, Indianapolis and Morgan Austin, North Manchester; children, Ryan (Amanda) Austin, Wilmot and Jarrod Austin, Charles City, Iowa; and brothers, Karl (Judi) Keirn, Collamer and Ken (Annette) Keirn, Fernley, Nevada. Karen was preceded in death by her parents; and sister Kay E. Michael.

Family and friends may call Saturday April 12, 2025 from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. at McKee Mortuary, 1401 State Road 114 West, North Manchester, Indiana. A celebration of Karen’s life will begin at the conclusion of calling with Pastor J.P. Freeman officiating.
