Mary E. Shirar, 75, Marion, passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2024, at Wesleyan Health Care & Rehabilitation Center in Marion. She was born in Marion, Indiana, on Sunday, November 21, 1948, to Earl and Eva (Osborn) Ringo. On November 6, 1994, she married Richard "Dick" L. Shirar, and he preceded her in death on February 11, 2017.
Mary graduated from Oak Hill High School and continued her post-secondary studies at Tucker Area Career Center. She later graduated from IU-Kokomo, where she received her associate's degree. She worked at JoAnn Fabric, where she met her husband, Richard. She also worked as an RN for Wesleyan Health Care. She loved gardening, cooking, and spending time with family, as well as watching home improvement shows. Mary became the neighborhood cat lady.
Survivors include her children, Jennifer (David) Stevens, Julie (Lawrence) Smith, and Christopher (Kristin) Grow; step-children, Steve (Toulou) Shirar and Kathy (Allon) Durkes; grandchildren, Tyler Rose, Zachary (Jordanya) Burton, Jasmine (Cody) Workman, Kendra (Jake) Ancil, Kelsey (Adam) Johnson, Kayleigh Smith, Kaeda Smith, Daivari Smith, Jayden Gray, Jaron Gray, and Jayla Gray; step-grandchildren, David (Jenny) Durkes, Steve (Kim) Durkes, Jeff (Kelly) Durkes, Kassie (Tod) Miller, and Stephanie (Eric) Rosenberg; great-grandchildren, Elijah, Adelynn, Emersyn, Dean, Iziah, Myles, Braxton, and Emilio; step-great-grandchildren, Derek (Ashton), Joel, Brandon, Drew (Leah), Justin (Cassidy), Lauren, Janette (Brayden), Lori, Toby, Kaysi, and Caitlyn; great-great-grandchildren, Brandon, Gunner, Drew, Capri, Jett, Derek, Emmerson, and Rhett; sister, Martha Welch; special niece, Angela Downham; special friends and caregivers, Rhonda Purvis and Sonia Smith; and several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; son, David Rose; brothers, Bobby Osborn and James Cranfill; sister, Vicki Leslie; and brother-in-law, David Leslie.
The family will receive visitors from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.
On Friday, May 24, 2024, additional visitation will take place at North Chapel from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon with Mary's funeral service beginning at 12:00 noon. Pastor James Schroeder will be officiating with burial following at Grant Memorial Park.
