Miami Correctional Facility Inmate Found Dead in Cell

BUNKER HILL – A 23-year-old inmate at Miami Correctional Facility has died after prison staff found him unresponsive in his cell.

Harrison Shepherd was found unresponsive at 11:21 p.m. on April 1. First responders and medical staff came to his assistance after an emergency medical signal was issued, according to a press release.

Shepherd was transported by ambulance to Duke’s Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:11 a.m. on April 2.

Jail officials say the cause of death is unknown at this time. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

An investigation is pending with the Division of Investigations and Intelligence at Miami Correctional Facility and the Indiana State Police.

Shepherd was sentenced out of Wabash County, and was serving a six-year sentence for burglary. His earliest possible release date was July 2018.
