Michael “Mike” Joseph Reed

Michael “Mike” Joseph Reed, 77, Marion, passed away at 2:30 pm on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. He was born in Hamilton, Ohio, on February 14, 1948, to Charles and Lillian (Marshall) Reed. On February 14, 2017, he married Debra Smelser.

After graduating from Marion High School in 1966, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a jet engine mechanic. During his time in service, he earned the National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Following his military career, he drag-raced (1/4 mile, old-school style) until it became more work than fun. He knew his role was creating the cars instead. He was a very skilled auto mechanic by trade and the owner of Reed’s Automotive in Marion. His passion for restoring classic cars and street rods led to numerous accomplishments, including restoring the Crosley cars displayed in the Marion Public Library and First Farmers Bank & Trust. No doubt considered a local legend in the community of classic car restoration, some of his more famous builds belonged to former Chicago Bears Coach Mike Ditka, Hank Williams, Jr, and actor Ken Wahl of the show Wiseguy. One of his personal restorations, his 1956 Chevy panel van, was featured as a centerfold article in SuperChevy Magazine. Mike was highly sought after for his car knowledge, and those who knew him understood this to be true: “You can hang out with Mike, but Mike’s not hanging out with you.” Beyond his automotive achievements, he was an active member of several car clubs over the years and spent nearly every dry weekend at an area car show with his family. He loved Charlie Brown, plain M&M’s, Mickey Mouse, and Christmas.

Survivors include his wife, Debra Reed of Marion; daughter, Melanie (Kevin) Beaver; sons, Michael Reed II, and Gary Reed; step-sons, John “J.R.” (Angela) Turney and Anthony (Heather) Turney; grandchildren, Kennedy Reed, Sean Beaver, Ian Beaver, Joshua Turney, Jackson Turney, Candace (Tanner) Foy, Jillian Turney, Reny Alcantara, and Kayla Alcantara; 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Sue (Dale) Cruea; dog, Coco, as well as several beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lillian Reed; and one nephew, Charlie Reed.
