Online Safety Alert: Beware of scammers posing as police officers


WABASH, IN- The Wabash City Police Department has been made aware of a new scam where fraudsters are impersonating police officers to extort money from unsuspecting individuals. These scammers may contact you via phone, claiming that you are involved in legal trouble or that you owe fines, demanding immediate payment.

Important Reminder: The police will NEVER contact you by phone to demand money or payment details.

Here are some tips to protect yourself:

1. Hang Up: If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a police officer demanding money, hang up immediately.

2. Verify the Call: If you’re concerned the call might be genuine, independently look up the phone number of your local police department and call them directly to verify.

3. Do Not Share Personal Information: Never give out personal information, banking details, or make payments over the phone to unsolicited callers.

4. Report the Scam: If you receive a suspicious call, report it to your local police department or a relevant fraud prevention authority.
