Paul D. McWhirt, 77, Gas City, passed away at 4:08 am on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Marion, Indiana, on Sunday, May 25, 1947, to Garold and Wilma (Fogelson) Mcwhirt. On April 4, 1977, he married Vincenza “Vinnie” M. Valentino.
Paul attended Mississinewa High School and joined the United States Army, serving in Vietnam 1967-1968, receiving 6 Purple Hearts. He later worked as a Chief of SPD for 20 years with the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System. He was a member of the Jonesboro Volunteer Fire and Rescue for 25 years, helping to save lives and provide comfort to families. Paul greatly enjoyed model trains, going to the Indy 500 with family where he met his favorite driver Mario Andretti, music (especially the Beatles), he had a wonderful sense of humor, and his loving nature never met a stranger.
Survivors include his sons, Paul (Kim) McWhirt Jr. of Vance, AL, Craig (Tina) McWhirt of Muncie, IN; daughters, Michelina “Michelle” (Mike) Burrows of Marion, Indiana and April (Nile) Baker, Gas City, Indiana; grandsons, Austin (Shyenne) McWhirt, Aaron (Jordan) McWhirt, Wesley (Sarah) Baker, Adam McWhirt, Dakota (Jessie) Stevenson; granddaughters, Courtney (Christian) Robinson, Emily (Michael) Brown, Jaylee (Trey Laster) McWhirt, Isabella (Zachary) Minnis, Madison Stevenson; brother Charles (Blanche) Mcwhirt, Charlotte (Larry) McWhirt; cousin Phyliss Smith; great-grandsons, Aiden, Any, Easton, Matthew, Wyatt, Jesse, Arlo, Jonah, Brody, Benji, Bastian and baby Steveson; great-granddaughters Norma, Sophia, Ellis and Adaline Mae.
He was preceded in death by parents, Garold and Wilma McWhirt; cousin, Nancy Hunter; brothers, Gerald McWhirt, Michael McWhirt; brother-in-law, Charles “Smitty” Smith.
The family will receive visitors from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Monday, December 9, 2024, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, Storey Chapel 400 E. Main St., Gas City, IN.
A Funeral Service to celebrate Paul’s life will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at the funeral home with Pastor Mick Simpkins officiating with emtombment to follow at Grant Memorial Park.
