Paul E. McCowan, 90, of Marion, went to be with his Heavenly Lord and Savior at 1:06 pm on Sunday, September 29, 2024, in his home in Marion surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Overton County, Tennessee, on Wednesday, May 30, 1934, to Johnnie and Willie (Pippin) McCowan. On August 25, 1956, he married the love of his life, Anna Jean Looper.
Paul worked as a Die Set Leader for 45 years with General Motors in Marion. He was a dedicated member of Calvary Social Brethren Church, serving as Deacon, Trustee, and Sunday School Superintendent. He was also a member of the UAW Local 977. A master gardener, Paul tended to his garden at home until he could no longer do so. He enjoyed traveling, especially trips to Alaska with his wife. Paul cherished time with his family, particularly attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. An avid Indianapolis Colts fan, Paul will be remembered as a generous, loving, and family-centered man devoted to his Lord.
Paul is survived by his beloved wife with whom he just celebrated 68 years of marriage, Anna J. McCowan of Marion; daughters, Helen Annette McCowan of Fairmount and Patricia (Jeff) Rittenhouse of Marion; brothers, James O. (Jean) McCowan of Muncie and Argle McCowan of Monterey, TN; sisters, Dean (Hubert) Copeland of Cookville, TN, and Sue Copeland of Sparta, TN; grandchildren, Jerry Carson of Marion, Jamie Green of Jonesboro, and Jonathan (Shelby) Green of Fairmount; granddaughter-in-law, Natashia Rittenhouse; great-granddaughters, Alie (Marshall) Campbell, Aurora Green, Tristen Rittenhouse, and Caidence Rittenhouse; great-grandsons, Dylan Billings, Iben Green, and Matthew Green; great-great-grandson, Cooper Campbell; his granddog, Remmi; as well as several nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie and Willie Mae McCowan; father- and mother-in-law, Haskell (Dorothy) Looper; brothers, Oscar McCowans, Elmer McCowan, and Dailey McCowan; sisters, Joanna Carmack and Elsie McCowan; sister in infancy, Sally McCowan; and grandson, Jeffrey A. “Champ” Rittenhouse, Jr.
The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.
Immediately following the visitation, a service to celebrate Paul’s life will begin at 1:00 pm, officiated by Paul’s brother, James McCowan. Burial will take place at Grant Memorial Park.
The family would like to recognize Paul’s grandson, Jerry Carson, for dedicating his life to taking care of grandpa in his final years.
