PERU, IN – January 9, 2025, thirty newly appointed troopers graduated from the 86th Indiana State Police Academy. One of those troopers are being assigned to the Indiana State Police Peru District where they will begin their next phase of training, a three-month field training period, riding with veteran troopers. The purpose of the field training is to put into practical application the training received over the duration of the formal academy.
Upon successful completion of field training, each trooper will be assigned a state police patrol vehicle and will begin solo patrol. These troopers have already completed a journey of 22 weeks and over 1,200 hours of structured training in law enforcement techniques as well as hands-on and scenario-based training at the Indiana State Police Recruit Academy. Some training areas included criminal and traffic law, crash investigation, emergency vehicle operations, self-defense, firearms, de-escalation, impaired driving detection, first aid, scenario-based training, and other classes necessary for modern policing.
Wesley B. Kushman, 29, is a native of Marion, IN, and a 2014 graduate of Eastbrook High School. After graduation, Kushman served in the US Marine Corps for five years. After serving, Kushman attended Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU), where he obtained his master’s degree in economics. He enjoys spending time outdoors, playing sports, and creating memories with family and friends. Kushman is also an active member of a Jiu-Jitsu club.
Kushman resides and will primarily patrol Grant County.
