Pollinator and Natural Resources Field Day Workshop, Salamonie Lake, Aug. 8

ANDREWS, IN- Upper Wabash Invasives Network invites the public to Salamonie Lake, Aug.8, at 8:30 a.m. for a Pollinator and Natural Resources Field Day and Workshop featuring habitat management with native pollinator plants.

The workshop will meet at Salamonie Lake’s Upper Wabash Interpretive Services, 3691 New Holland Road, Andrews, located within Lost Bridge West SRA.

The workshop will offer chem credits – Continuing Certification Hour (CCH) - through the Office of Indiana State Chemist. Cost is $10 cash or check addressed to Purdue Ed Fund, payable day of workshop. Those seeking Chem Credits must attend the entire workshop.

Available CCH:

  • Cat. RT – Registered Technician: 4 credits.
  • Cat. 1– Agricultural Pest Management: 5 credits.
  • Cat. 2 - Forest Pest Management: 5 credits.
  • Cat. 3A - Ornamental Pest Management: 4 credits.
  • Cat. 3B - Turf Management: 4 credits.
  • Cat. 5 - Aquatic Pest Management: 4 credits.
  • Cat. 6 - Industrial Weed Management: 4 credits.
  • Cat. 7A - Industrial, Institutional, Structural and Health-related Pest Management: 3 credits.
  • Cat. 8 - Community-wide Mosquito Control: 3 credits.

The day’s schedule of events as follows:

8:30-9 a.m. - Registration and Breakfast (Doughnuts and Coffee provided).

9:00-9:15 a.m. - Welcome and Introduction: “Acronyms of the Industry.”

Speakers and sponsors: Representatives from the IDNR, NRCS, SWCD, SICIM, UWIN, USACE, IMN, and Purdue CES will be discussing what they regulate in the industry and their roles in the community.

9:15-9:30 a.m. - Travel to Field Stations.

9:30-11:45 a.m. - Field Day Stations

Speaker: Justin Emmons, IDNR Wildlife Specialist

  1. Native Pollinator Considerations and Ecosystems: Topics: Plant Care and Establishments, Insects, Insecticide Applications, DriftWatch, Native Species to Plant.
  2. Wetland Management (multiple locations): Topics: Pesticide Fate in our water, Water Usage, Invasive Species ID and Removal.
  3. Prairie Establishment and Care: Topics: Native Species, Herbicide Safety, PPE, Prescription Burning and Burn Cycles.

11:45-12:45 p.m. - Travel back to building and lunch (provided).

12:45-1:30 p.m. - Mechanical, Chemical and Cultural Control of Invasive Species. Speaker: Dugan Julian, Northeast Regional Specialist SICIM. 

1:30-2:30 p.m. - Herbicide Label Review, PPE and Invasive Species - Plants and Insects. Speaker: Chandler Sonafrank, IDNR UWIS, naturalist.

2:30-3 p.m. - Conservation Reserve Program. Speaker FSA and Levi Sherman ISDA.

3 p.m. - Adjourn and sign out for CCHs.
