After high school, Richard began working as a fireman on steam locomotives for the railroad. As steam engines began to be replaced with diesel, Richard went to work at the General Motors plant in Kokomo, IN. He entered the skilled trades (carpenter) program for GM, became a journeyman, and worked in skilled trades within the plant. Due to his success in skilled trades, Richard then advanced into a management position—where he found his calling. He completed his career with GM as Supervisor of Skilled Trades and was involved in managing several successful expansions of the various GM plants in Kokomo. During his career at GM, Richard also built his own family homes and then continued his own residential contracting business in his spare time.
Locally, Richard and his family were members of First Christian Church. Richard served as an Elder, taught the “Young Marrieds” Sunday School class for 25 years, and was heavily involved with the building maintenance and repairs.
As their children aged, Richard and June continued to fill their home with exchange students. The exchange students afforded Richard the opportunity to educate (and debate), and June the opportunity to feed and support, both Gustavo Souza, from Brazil, and Malene Christensen, from Denmark.
What spare time he had, Richard enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time outdoors. In retirement, Richard and June enjoyed winters at their home in Florida where they specialized in catching their limit of Speckled Trout.
