Rose Evelyn Young

Rose Evelyn Young, 91, North Manchester, peacefully passed away on February 24, 2024, surrounded by her loving family at her home. The daughter of Marion and Mildred (Doyle) Rheam Sr., Rose Evelyn was born December 3, 1932, in Hartford City, Indiana.
Rose Evelyn started school at Roll School in Hartford City and then attended Jefferson School in Huntington before graduating from Monument City High School in 1950. She married Ernest Alvin Young Jr. the same year, and they remained married until 1968, during which time they had nine children together. Rose Evelyn was dedicated to her home and professional career. She worked at Essex in Andrews for five years before beginning work at Singer Controls in North Manchester for over twenty-three years. She also worked a second job at Manchester Foundry, cleaning offices for eighteen years. She eventually retired from both jobs in 1992. As a single mother, Rose Evelyn wanted her children to have everything they ever wanted.
Rose Evelyn was an excellent storyteller and essay writer. She could fill any silence with conversation on a number of subjects. She previously led the choir at United Baptist Church in rural Elwood and loved being a part of Bell and Beaus Square Dance Club, where she formerly served as president. Rose Evelyn enjoyed passing the time doing genealogy, gardening, canning, fishing, camping, and crocheting, but what made her happiest was being with her children and grandchildren. In addition to her nine children, she was blessed with seventy-two grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Rose Evelyn had a special connection with each one of them. She loved when they made “tent city” in her home and especially enjoyed sitting on her porch swing and watching them.
The loving memory of Rose Evelyn Young will be forever cherished by her sons, Gary (Barbara) Young, Carmel, Rex (Charlene) Young, Goshen, and Philip (Kate) Young, Medina, Ohio; daughters, Kay (Bill) Bailey, Marion, Rebecca (Don) Wampler, Bourbon, Beverly (David) Spangler, The Villages, Florida, Debra (Stan) Taylor, Huntington, Barbara Wood, North Manchester, and Kathy (Paul) Selby, Fort Wayne; brother, Ron (Patsy) Rheam, Loogootee; sisters, Joyce Reese, Gas City and Carolyn (Roger) Bryant, Van Buren; twenty-three grandchildren; forty-four great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Rose Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Marion Earl Rheam Jr.; and two grandsons, William Robert Billisitz and James Robert Spann.
