Single vehicle fatal crash in Huntington County

HUNTINGTON COUNTY, IN- At approximately 10:08 am on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, Gary D. Harvey, age 76, of Columbia, Tennessee was the operator of a 2012 Dodge pickup truck that was southbound on Interstate 69 nearing the 283-mile marker when he experienced a medical event, causing him to become unconscious. He impacted the rear of a southbound semi tractor-trailer, which deflected him into the median where he traveled into and along the cable barriers, coming to rest on the northbound side of the interstate. Law enforcement and first responders arrived on-scene and began CPR, continuing until EMS
arrived. Efforts were maintained per protocol until advised to cease per medical authority.

Mr. Harvey’s passenger, his wife Ann, suffered minor injuries in the property damage collision and was treated at the scene.

An autopsy is scheduled at the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center in Fort Wayne to determine the cause of death. Mr. Harvey sustained no injuries as a result of the collision with the trailer and cable barrier.

The coroner's office was assisted by the Markle Police Department, Huntington County Sheriff's Department, Markle Fire Department, Indiana State Police Motor Carrier Unit, Parkview Huntington Hospital EMS and Samaritan Air Ambulance, and Huntington Central Dispatch.
