Wabash City partners with IU-Kokomo to expand Dual-Language Immersion Program

Wabash, IN–Wabash City Schools will be partnering with IU-Kokomo to extend the dual-language immersion (DLI) program at the secondary level. DLI programming is currently offered through 7th grade. This partnership will provide DLI offerings to student as they transition from middle school to high school.
In 7th and 8th grade, DLI students will continue with two DLI courses in their schedule. These courses will be DLI Spanish World Language and DLI Spanish Culture. These courses will strengthen the student’s language skills and knowledge of Spanish culture.
When DLI students enter their freshman year of high school, they will begin taking Spanish courses through IU-Kokomo. During their freshman and sophomore years, students will take four Spanish courses (one per semester) that are required for a Spanish minor. The courses will be taught in an online format by IU-Kokomo faculty. WCS students will be provided with DLI support by a teacher at Wabash High School to ensure they are successful in the college-level courses.
After completion of the courses for a Spanish minor, students will have the opportunity to continue Spanish courses in one of two ways. Students may choose to continue Spanish courses that may apply to a Spanish major or select courses that align with future career
goals in the areas of business, healthcare, or education. DLI students that complete the DLI pathway can potentially graduate with up to 30 Spanish college credits. This is in addition to the many other dual credit offerings at Wabash Early College High School.
We are pleased to be able to offer our DLI students the ability to earn college credits in Spanish while still in high school. Our partnership with IU-Kokomo is a valuable resource for our students and families.
