Wabash County Crash Claims Life of Wabash Man

Wabash County, IN – Yesterday, February 4, 2025, just before 7:30 a.m., officers from the Indiana State Police and the Wabash County Sheriff’s Office responded to an injury-involved crash on State Road 124 near County Road 800 East in which a Wabash, IN, man died.
The preliminary crash investigation by Senior Trooper Dustin Rutledge revealed that Steven Hamblen, 27, of Huntington, IN, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche traveling westbound on State Road 124 near County Road 800 East. For an undetermined reason, the Chevrolet crossed the center of the roadway and struck a 2014 Ford Taurus driven by Gregory Welch, 42, of Wabash, IN.
Welch was pronounced deceased at the crash scene by the Wabash County Coroner’s Office. Hamblen was transported to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
This is an ongoing investigation. At this time, neither the consumption of alcoholic beverages nor narcotics are suspected of contributing to this crash. Notification to the family of the deceased has been made.
Senior Trooper Rutledge was assisted by Master Trooper Jeremy Perez, Master Trooper AJ Coffee, the Wabash County Sheriff’s Office, Wabash Fire Department, Noble Township Volunteer Fire Department, Wabash County EMA, and Wabash County Coroner’s Office.
