MIAMI COUNTY, IN- The Miami County Community Foundation recently awarded grants from the Paul D. “Pat” Malaska Memorial Fund to Bunker Hill Baseball, North Miami Youth League, and Peru Youth Baseball in support of the leagues’ programs and activities.
A 1933 graduate of Crawfordsville High School, Malaska was a standout athlete who played varsity basketball before continuing his career at Purdue University. There, he was a three-year starter and helped lead the Boilermakers to two Big Ten championship teams. He also set a college basketball record that still stands today by stalling for 14 minutes during a game while eating an ice cream cone, a legendary feat later featured in Sports Illustrated.
After graduating from Purdue, Malaska played professional basketball in the National Basketball League, a predecessor to today’s NBA.
Through grants like this one, the fund continues to honor Pat’s legacy by supporting opportunities for young people in the community.
