WABASH, IN – The Honeywell Foundation, Inc., Community Foundation of Wabash County (CFWC), Wabash
County Development Corporation (WCDC), and The Arc of Wabash County announced the launch of the Canal Street Artist Collective, a transformative arts and culture initiative designed to strengthen Northeast Indiana’s creative economy through talent retention, workforce development, placemaking, and cultural tourism.
Located in the Indiana Arts Commission-designated Wabash Cultural District, the Canal Street Artist Collective will transform vacant Canal Street properties into a mixed-use creative hub featuring artist housing, market-rate apartments, studio and instructional space, and public-facing arts experiences. The project will further establish Wabash’s reputation as a regional center for arts, culture, and creative enterprise while expanding access to arts education and programming throughout Northeast Indiana.
The Canal Street Artist Collective builds upon several years of community planning and strategic development efforts. In 2022, Imagine One 85 identified downtown investment as a critical strategy for enhancing quality of life, strengthening community identity, and supporting long-term population attraction and retention. Building on those priorities, the WCDC began exploring opportunities in 2024 to redevelop underutilized downtown properties and create projects capable of generating lasting economic and community impact. In late 2025, The Honeywell
Foundation, Inc., CFWC, WCDC, and The Arc of Wabash County began collaborating to explore how arts and
culture could help reimagine these downtown properties and expand opportunities for housing, workforce
development, and community engagement. In February 2026, the partners began pursuing support through the READI 2.0 Arts & Culture Grant Program.
On July 1, 2026, the project was awarded $4 million through the READI 2.0 Arts & Culture Grant Program, made possible through Lilly Endowment Inc., providing significant support for redevelopment and long-term activation of the Canal Street Artist Collective. As part of the project’s early development, the CFWC provided a $2 million impact investment loan to the WCDC to acquire the Canal Street properties and position the project for future development.
The Canal Street Artist Collective represents an anticipated $18 million investment in downtown Wabash. Project partners will continue to refine plans, finalize project components, and initiate a public campaign to secure the resources necessary to advance the project’s vision.
Through partnerships with The Honeywell Foundation’s Arts In Education, Arts For All, and other community
programming initiatives, participating artists will have opportunities to earn income while providing music instruction, visual arts and theatre workshops, performances, and community programming that serves youth, families, older adults, and individuals of all abilities.
The project is designed to create lasting economic and cultural impact by pairing attainable live-work spaces with meaningful teaching, performance, and community engagement opportunities. By supporting artists’ ability to build sustainable careers in Northeast Indiana, the Canal Street Artist Collective will help attract and retain creative talent while strengthening the regional workforce.
Beyond supporting artists, the Canal Street Artist Collective will serve as a catalyst for broader downtown
revitalization. The mixed-use redevelopment will include market-rate residential apartments, a bookstore, an artist co-op, and vocational training opportunities. Together, these elements will create a vibrant Canal Street destination that attracts visitors, supports downtown living, expands economic opportunity, and strengthens the long-term vitality of downtown Wabash.
The Canal Street Artist Collective brings together four organizations with complementary strengths and a shared vision for community impact:
- Honeywell Foundation, Inc. will serve as the lead and anchor programming partner, overseeing artist
engagement and long-term activation of the Collective through arts education and community programming. - Community Foundation of Wabash County (CFWC) will serve as a financial and strategic partner, helping
identify and structure investment resources to support the project’s long-term success. - Wabash County Development Corporation (WCDC) will lead redevelopment efforts, transforming vacant
properties into attainable artist and residential housing, and mixed-use creative space while managing
project implementation. - The Arc of Wabash County will serve as a programming and investment partner, providing inclusive arts
programming, vocational training, and educational opportunities for individuals of all abilities.
Together, the partners are creating an ecosystem of arts, education, tourism, workforce development, and community engagement that will advance the long-term cultural and economic vitality of Wabash County and Northeast Indiana.
