
Anna Jean McCowan, 89, of La Fontaine, passed away at 6:20 am on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at Rolling Meadows Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in the Dry Hollow community in Overton County, Tennessee, on Tuesday, June 15, 1937, to Haskell and Dorothy (Raines) Looper. On August 25, 1956, she married the love of her life, Paul E. McCowan, having shared 68 years of marriage before his passing.
Anna graduated from Rickman High School and worked as a sales representative for 27 years with Sears. She loved attending and was a member of Calvary Social Brethren Church. She loved to travel with her husband, Paul and visited 49 of the 50 states. She especially enjoyed going to Alaska, having visited there 6 times. She also loved to bake and cook for her family, gardening and canning vegetables, visiting her family in Tennessee, and seeing her grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughters, Helen Annette McCowan, Patricia (Jeff) Rittenhouse; grandchildren, Jerry Carson, Jamie Green, Jonathon (Shelby) Green; great-grandchildren, Alie (Marshall) Campbell, Aurora Green, Dylan Billings, Iben Green, and Matthew Green; great-great-grandson, Cooper Campbell; as well as her grand dog and buddy, Remy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. McCowan; parents, Haskell and Dorothy Looper; siblings, W.J. (Frances) Looper, Etta (Arnold) Thompson, and Beulah (Archie D.) Thompson; and grandson, Jeffrey A. “Champ” Rittenhouse, Jr.
The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Monday, August 3, 2026, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.
Immediately following the time of visitation, a service to celebrate Anna’s life will begin at 1:00 pm with Rev. James O. McCowan officiating. Burial will take place at Grant Memorial Park.
