Douglas “Doug” E. Maples

Douglas “Doug” E. Maples, 79, Gas City, passed away in his home on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. He was born in Wise County, Virginia on August 18, 1947, to George and Zella (Cheek) Maples. On August 22, 1971, he married Joyce Terry and she survives.

Doug attended Mississinewa High School and worked as a machine operator at Dana Corporation. He was proudly one of the original members of the Tribe Motorcycle Club and was also a member of the local Moose Lodge. Doug enjoyed classic cars and always looked forward to James Dean Days and Ducktail Run weekend. He loved riding his Harley and could strike up a conversation with just about anyone, whether a longtime friend or a complete stranger. Above all, Doug had a deep love for his family and took great pride in being an excellent provider for them.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Maples of Gas City; son, Douglas (Shan) Maples, Jr. of Jonesboro; daughter, Terry (Kyle) O’Brien of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Austin Cannan, Seath Cannan, Blayne Maples; and sisters, Phyllis (Dave) Monin of Marion and Jan (Tom) Stigen of Unicoi, TN; several nieces, nephews, and friends.  

He was preceded in death by his father, George Maples; mother, Zella Planck; step-father, Reverend Melvin Planck; and brothers, Tom Maples, Ron Maples, Donald “Buddy” Maples, and Joe Maples.

The family will receive visitors from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St., Gas City, IN.

Immediately following visitation, a service to celebrate Doug’s life will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Needham-Storey-Wampner, with Pastor David Morris officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.

Following the burial, family and friends are invited to gather at the Gas City Moose for a meal and fellowship as we continue to celebrate Doug’s life.
