Michael E. Urschel

Michael E. Urschel, 71, of rural Wabash, Indiana, died at 5:28 pm, Sunday, August 4, 2024, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. He was born on November 23, 1952, in Wabash, Indiana, to Itha "Gene" Urschel and Doris (Bower) Bever.

Mike was a 1971 graduate of Wabash High School, and also attended Northfield High School. He worked as a salesman for 1st Ayd Corporation in Elgin, Illinois since 1988. Throughout his career, he was named Salesman of the Month countless times, and received many accolades for outstanding performance. Mike married Beverly Staats at the Dora Christian Church in Wabash, on October 15, 2010; but had been together for 22 years. He was a member of Wabash Eagles Lodge #549, and was a longtime member of A.P.A. Pool Association. Mike enjoyed riding horses, and in 2006 he competed in a 815 mile horse race from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Independence, Missouri finishing 6th out of 65 riders, and in 2007 he finished 2nd out of 45 riders. He competed for over a decade in endurance horse racing, having ridden thousands of miles in the wilderness. Mike also enjoyed shooting pool, watching westerns on television, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.  

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Urschel of Wabash, three children; Jeff Urschel of Wabash, Lindsay Urschel of Carmel, Indiana, and Lauren (Darin) Hoffman of Huntington, Indiana, three grandchildren; Heidi Urschel of Wabash, Lincoln Hoffman and Dani Hoffman, both of Huntington, two brothers, James L. (Kathy) Urschel of Wabash, Joe (Darcie) Bever of Lagro, Indiana, and step father, Don Bever of Wabash.  He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Steven Urschel, and sister, Elizabeth Bever.

Funeral services will be 10:00 am, Friday, August 9, 2024, at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Avenue, Wabash, with Mark Wisniewski, Minister officiating. Burial will be in LaFontaine I.O.O.F. Cemetery, LaFontaine.  Friends may call 3:00 - 7:00 pm, Thursday, at the funeral home.
