WABASH COUNTY, IN – Following a successful inaugural year, Destination Wabash
County, the nonprofit extension of Visit Wabash County, is excited to announce the
return of The Great March Cleanup throughout the entire month of March 2027. This
county-wide initiative will once again bring together community leaders, organizations,
businesses, and volunteers to make a visible and lasting impact on Wabash County’s
roadways and public spaces.
Republic Services is returning as the lead sponsor of The Great March Cleanup,
continuing its commitment to environmental stewardship and community involvement.
The company’s support plays an important role in helping coordinate this county-wide
effort and encouraging residents to take an active role in caring for their surroundings.
“At Republic Services, we believe that creating cleaner, healthier communities starts
with working together,” said Brooke Waldon, Sales Supervisor at Republic Services. “The
impact of last year’s Great March Cleanup demonstrates what is possible when
residents, organizations, and local businesses unite for a shared purpose. We’re proud to
return as a sponsor in 2027 and continue supporting an initiative that makes a
meaningful difference throughout Wabash County.”
In 2026, 22 local coordinators helped mobilize 284 volunteers who collected an
impressive 556 bags of trash from roadways and public spaces throughout Wabash
County. Building on that success, organizers hope to expand participation in 2027 and
encourage even more residents to take pride in keeping their communities clean and
beautiful.
The initiative grew from a small volunteer cleanup effort started by Amy Ford in 2020
along Hill Street, extending toward Lagro. After seeing the immediate impact of that
effort, local volunteers began discussing how to expand similar cleanups across multiple communities, eventually growing into the county-wide movement known today as The Throughout March 2027, local coordinators will organize volunteer groups to clean targeted areas in Lagro, LaFontaine, North Manchester, Roann, Somerset, Urbana, and Wabash. Each community will focus on public roadways and shared spaces most in need of attention. March provides an ideal opportunity for cleanup efforts, as grasses and weeds remain low, making roadside litter easier to identify and remove.
“Seeing 284 volunteers come together to collect more than 550 bags of trash is a
powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when we work toward a common goal,”
said Christine Flohr, Executive Director of Visit Wabash County and Destination Wabash
County. “The Great March Cleanup is about more than picking up litter. It’s about
community pride, collaboration, and creating a welcoming environment for residents,
businesses, and visitors alike. We’re excited to build on that momentum in 2027.”
Leading up to Earth Day in April 2027, Destination Wabash County plans to highlight the
efforts of participating volunteers, organizations, and communities, celebrating the
collective impact of The Great March Cleanup.
Residents, businesses, service organizations, and community groups are encouraged to
participate throughout March. Whether organizing a group cleanup, volunteering
individually, or identifying a roadway in need of attention, every effort contributes to a
cleaner, more welcoming Wabash County.
